What is the difference between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s camera

Is the iPhone 4s really worth it? Is the iPhone 4s better than the iPhone 4? What are the main differences? These questions are asked a lot by people. Well the main differences are:

  • it is faster – a compairson will have to following in another post
  • the siri function: although this is fun to play with, it is not a HUGE factor
  • the camera: which is what this post is really about

Here is the break down of the cameras:

iPhone 4:

  • Resolution: 5.00 Megapixels
  • Lens:  Non-Zoom (29mm eq.)
  • ISO:  80-1000
  • Shutter:  1/15-1/10055
  • Max Aperture:  2.8

iPhone 4s:

  • Resolution: 8.00 Megapixels
  • Lens:  Non-Zoom (35mm eq.)
  • ISO: 64-800
  • Shutter:  1/15-1/30000
  • Max Aperture:  2.4

So where are we going with this and what does it really mean?

Lets take an example and let you see the difference. Clicking the picture will open the full resolution in an overlay.

Which web browsers are color managed?

In your journey through the interwebs a question you should ask: is my browser color managed. Or better yet, is my browser ICC Version 4 ready.?.

Well, you may ask, what is ICC? In short, the International Color Consortium was setup to define a standard of color between different devices.  Let’s use digital photography as an example. When you take a digital photograph, without standards, it could look different on your camera, then on your computer monitor, then on the web, and also when you print. ICC was setup to define how it should look.  Device profiles provide color management systems with the information necessary to convert color data between native device color spaces and device independent color spaces.

This could go one for pages, but we will leave it at that and get to the good part: which web browsers are color managed.

  • Safari is ICC Version 4 ready
  • IE9 is also ICC Version 4 ready
  • IE8 (and I assume below) is not color manged and does not support ICC profiles
  • Firefox (up through the latest) is only ICC Version 2 ready. It use to be the standard for color managed browsers.
  • Chrome is not color manged and does not support ICC profiles
In conclusion, if you are worried about true color as you surf the tronz, then buy a Mac and use Safari. Or if you must use Windows then upgrade to IE9. Firefox will get you half way there and works in most cases. Chrome and earlier versions of IE will not cut it and you should not use these browsers if you are concerned with true color.

Lens Pillows?

I really got behind the idea of the coffee mug that looks like Canon L glass, so why wouldn’t I love the idea of a pillow in the same fashion? Please add this to my list of useless gift ideas.

The pillow that looks like a Canon (or *yuck* Nikon) lens

Mount your Canon and Nikon SLR lens on your iPhone

Ok, so this is pretty crazy. I, admittedly, love the iPhone camera. In fact, it was a goal of mine to be the first photographer to photograph a wedding using the iPhone exclusively; however, it has apparently already been done. Nevertheless, I do think the iPhone is capable of producing quality web (and small print) images, and I thoroughly enjoy having this type of camera in my pocket almost all of the time. Key point: camera in my pocket.

Buy the The iPhone 4 SLR Mount at the Photojojo Store!

When I first read about this mount, my first thought was I HAVE TO HAVE THIS. Then I saw the price tag of $250, and then I really thought about it. If I want to take pictures with my beautiful collection of L glass, then I’m going to slap them on my full frame sensor. Putting a hefty lens on the iPhone negates its strongest point of being a pocket camera.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have this little device; however, I would not love it two-hundred fifty dollars worth. A few cool points would be:

  • L glass on your iPhone = winning
  • being able to shoot at f/1.2 on your iPhone
  • fish-eye and tilt / shift lenses would be fun
  • it would be a great conversation piece
  • I might get ((a little)) more respect when I show up to photograph a wedding using nothing but the iPhone.
  • it would make for great blogging / facebooking
A few negative points other than the already stated size and price:
  • cannot control aperture. Sure it is nice to shoot at f/1.2 sometimes, but I prefer to keep it in the 1.4 to 2.0 range
  • although minor, it would be nice not to have to photograph upside down. They play the “iPhone doesn’t have a mirror”card, but see next point.
  • I do not think there is an integrated app. It would be nice to have control over the lens (at least f-stop) and some minor image adjusting (like flipping the image upright).
  • there is a huge bottle neck in the awesomeness of the lens and the capability of the camera.
So, if  any of you want to buy it for me, I will gladly play with it for a couple of weeks and post all about it……………and then throw it in my “junk” drawer where the rest of my useless gadgets go to die.

SmugMug coupon code

SmugMug is an online photo hosting company. I don’t really need a company to host my images, because I have a web-host provider and can setup online photo galleries through wordpress (I prefer NextGen gallery and Gallery 2 {and still testing Gallery 3}). However, I use SmugMug because it allows me to sell my images online, and it requires very little effort on my end. I can set the prices or individual galleries. The user can go to the gallery, choose and purchase images directly from the site. SmugMug will process the payment and order, and I collect the profit. They use two different labs: Bayphoto and EZprints. I am very impressed with Bayphoto and use them as my printing service. SmugMug even allows you to setup coupons and fully customize your site. You can even use your own domain. I have mine setup at http://print.sabaphoto.com

Now for the good part the SmugMug coupon code :)
