What is the difference between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s camera

Is the iPhone 4s really worth it? Is the iPhone 4s better than the iPhone 4? What are the main differences? These questions are asked a lot by people. Well the main differences are:

  • it is faster – a compairson will have to following in another post
  • the siri function: although this is fun to play with, it is not a HUGE factor
  • the camera: which is what this post is really about

Here is the break down of the cameras:

iPhone 4:

  • Resolution: 5.00 Megapixels
  • Lens:  Non-Zoom (29mm eq.)
  • ISO:  80-1000
  • Shutter:  1/15-1/10055
  • Max Aperture:  2.8

iPhone 4s:

  • Resolution: 8.00 Megapixels
  • Lens:  Non-Zoom (35mm eq.)
  • ISO: 64-800
  • Shutter:  1/15-1/30000
  • Max Aperture:  2.4

So where are we going with this and what does it really mean?

Lets take an example and let you see the difference. Clicking the picture will open the full resolution in an overlay.

Atlanta sunset

Normally I try and get rid of the window reflection when taking pictures from inside; however I decided to just go with this one.

Best pork chops in Atlanta

I bought these two bone-in pork chops at the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market from Riverview Farms. They were about an inch thick cut of registered Berkshire (Kurobuta) pork. Riverview Farms is very commendable in that all of there animals eat organic food grown by them. This pork is lean with shorter muscle fibers and finer marbling. Because of the high quality of the pork, you are able to cook this just like a steak: sear it on both sides to a nice medium rare plus.It was phenomenally juicy and knocked Abbattoir off the throne for best pork chop I have ever eaten (Abbattoir does buy their meat from Riverview).

Here is an interesting tidbit about Berkshire:

Legend holds that Oliver Cromwell discovered the Berkshire breed more than 300 years ago while his army was wintering at Reading, the county seat of the shire of Berks in England. Later, the British made a diplomatic gift of Berkshire pigs to Japan, where the meat rivals the reputation of Kobe beef. The oldest pure breed pig in the U.S., Berkshires are now considered a rare breed.

Mount your Canon and Nikon SLR lens on your iPhone

Ok, so this is pretty crazy. I, admittedly, love the iPhone camera. In fact, it was a goal of mine to be the first photographer to photograph a wedding using the iPhone exclusively; however, it has apparently already been done. Nevertheless, I do think the iPhone is capable of producing quality web (and small print) images, and I thoroughly enjoy having this type of camera in my pocket almost all of the time. Key point: camera in my pocket.

Buy the The iPhone 4 SLR Mount at the Photojojo Store!

When I first read about this mount, my first thought was I HAVE TO HAVE THIS. Then I saw the price tag of $250, and then I really thought about it. If I want to take pictures with my beautiful collection of L glass, then I’m going to slap them on my full frame sensor. Putting a hefty lens on the iPhone negates its strongest point of being a pocket camera.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have this little device; however, I would not love it two-hundred fifty dollars worth. A few cool points would be:

  • L glass on your iPhone = winning
  • being able to shoot at f/1.2 on your iPhone
  • fish-eye and tilt / shift lenses would be fun
  • it would be a great conversation piece
  • I might get ((a little)) more respect when I show up to photograph a wedding using nothing but the iPhone.
  • it would make for great blogging / facebooking
A few negative points other than the already stated size and price:
  • cannot control aperture. Sure it is nice to shoot at f/1.2 sometimes, but I prefer to keep it in the 1.4 to 2.0 range
  • although minor, it would be nice not to have to photograph upside down. They play the “iPhone doesn’t have a mirror”card, but see next point.
  • I do not think there is an integrated app. It would be nice to have control over the lens (at least f-stop) and some minor image adjusting (like flipping the image upright).
  • there is a huge bottle neck in the awesomeness of the lens and the capability of the camera.
So, if  any of you want to buy it for me, I will gladly play with it for a couple of weeks and post all about it……………and then throw it in my “junk” drawer where the rest of my useless gadgets go to die.

City living

Living in midtown Atlanta is full of pros and cons. I’m sure I’ll dig deep in to both of those categories as I develop this blog. For now, I give you a pro.

This was taken with the iPhone and used the app “pro HDR” to combine two differently exposed image for one HDR image
